Stage 1: Fresh Seed (Week 0)
Freshness is everything.
- Sow within 1–3 weeks of harvest whenever possible.
- Germination rates decline rapidly after a few months.
Optional Seed Sterilization
- Soak for 5–10 minutes in 3% hydrogen peroxide.
- Rinse with distilled or RO water.
- Do not use bleach.
Growing Medium
A simple, airy mix works best.
Recommended:
- 100% long-fiber New Zealand sphagnum
or
- 80% long-fiber sphagnum
- 20% perlite
The medium should be moist but never waterlogged.
Sowing
Do not bury the seeds.
Simply:
- Wet the moss.
- Lay the seeds on top.
- Gently press them into the surface.
They need light to germinate.
Humidity
Aim for:
- 90–100% until germination
A humidity dome or sealed container works well.
Once seedlings appear, gradually reduce humidity over several months.
Target later:
- 70–90%
Temperatures
This is one of the most important factors.
Day
- 68–75°F (20–24°C)
Night
- 48–58°F (9–14°C)
Night cooling is essential.
Consistently warm nights often lead to slow growth or decline.
Lighting
Provide bright, indirect light.
Good targets:
- PPFD: 150–250 µmol/m²/s
- 12–14 hours daily
Too little light:
- Weak seedlings
- Little or no pitcher production
Too much light:
- Bleached leaves
- Burned moss
Water
Use only:
- Rainwater
- Reverse osmosis (RO)
- Distilled water
Keep the moss damp but not soggy.
Never let seedlings dry completely.
Airflow
Gentle airflow is very important.
Avoid stagnant air, which encourages mold and algae.
A small fan running indirectly works well.
Germination Time
Expect anywhere from:
- 4–12 weeks
Some seeds may take several months.
Be patient.
Seedling Care
Once the first true leaves appear:
Maintain:
- High humidity
- Bright light
- Cool nights
Do not fertilize immediately.
